The independent code of conduct.

Our members are committed to growing a network of productive, respectful, and inclusive independents, to give voice to the movement for independent leadership dedicated to restoring balance, service, and representation in American democracy.

1. Introduction

This Code of Conduct outlines the expected behavior for all members, participants, and attendees involved in our networking and political advising activities, whether conducted online (e.g., virtual meetings, forums, social media groups) or in-person (e.g., events, meetings, conferences). By participating, you agree to abide by these guidelines to ensure a productive, respectful, and inclusive environment.

2. Core Principles

A. Respect and Professionalism

  • Treat others with respect: All interactions should be professional, courteous, and respectful, regardless of political affiliation, background, experience, or status.

  • Zero Tolerance for Harassment: Harassment, intimidation, discrimination, or abuse in any form—including but not limited to comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, national origin, or political belief—will not be tolerated.

  • Constructive Dialogue: Engage in discussions with a focus on constructive feedback, mutual learning, and professional growth. Disagreements should be handled professionally and without personal attacks.

B. Integrity and Transparency

  • Honesty in Communication: Be truthful about your credentials, experience, and the information you present. Avoid misrepresenting facts or data.

  • Confidentiality: Respect the confidentiality of sensitive political strategies, client information, proprietary methods, or personal details shared within the group. Do not disseminate confidential information without explicit permission.

  • Disclosure of Conflicts: Promptly disclose any potential or actual conflicts of interest that may arise from your advising roles or networking interactions.

3. Online Conduct Guidelines

A. Digital Etiquette

  • Appropriate Tone: Recognize that text-based communication can lack nuance. Strive for clarity and a professional, respectful tone in all emails, posts, and chats.

  • Privacy: Do not share screenshots, recordings, or transcripts of private group conversations or virtual meetings without the explicit consent of all participants.

  • No Spam or Unauthorized Solicitation: Do not use the group's platforms for excessive self-promotion, unsolicited advertising, or spamming. Networking should be reciprocal and focused on mutual professional benefit.

B. Content and Sharing

  • Relevant Content: Ensure all shared content (articles, links, documents) is relevant to the group's focus on networking, political advising, and professional development.

  • Crediting Sources: Always credit the original source when sharing information, research, or documents. Avoid plagiarism.

4. In-Person Conduct Guidelines

A. Behavior at Events

  • Punctuality and Preparedness: Be punctual for scheduled meetings and events. Come prepared to contribute positively to the discussion or activity.

  • Mindful Consumption: If alcohol is served, consume responsibly. Impaired judgment is not an excuse for violating this Code of Conduct.

  • Safety First: Be aware of your surroundings and the safety of others. Report any concerning behavior to the event organizer immediately.

B. Professional Interaction

  • Respect Boundaries: Be mindful of personal space and professional boundaries. Obtain consent before taking photos or making recordings of others.

  • Active Listening: Give full attention to speakers and fellow attendees during presentations and conversations.

5. Political Advising Specific Guidelines

A. Ethical Practice

  • Adherence to Law: All advising must be conducted in compliance with relevant local, state, and federal laws, including campaign finance laws, election regulations, and ethics rules.

  • Client Interest: Always prioritize the lawful and ethical interests of the client or campaign you are advising.

  • Accuracy in Advising: Provide advice based on sound analysis, verifiable facts, and professional judgment, clearly distinguishing between objective data and personal opinion.

B. Role Clarity

  • Define Relationships: Clearly define the scope of your advising relationships, including expectations regarding compensation, confidentiality, and decision-making authority.

6. Reporting and Enforcement

A. Reporting Violations

If you witness or experience a violation of this Code of Conduct, please report it promptly and confidentially to the designated administrator/organizer(s) of the group. Reports should include details such as the nature of the violation, the people involved, and the time and place (online or in-person) it occurred.

B. Consequences

Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, which can include:

  1. A verbal or written warning.

  1. Temporary suspension from group activities or platforms.

  2. Permanent expulsion from the group, no refund of annual membership dues, with notification of the decision.

The severity of the action taken will be determined by the administrator/organizer(s) based on the nature and severity of the violation. Decisions regarding enforcement are final.
